The name Puarangi is used to refer to three similar Hibiscus species found in New Zealand. Very little is known about them, and over the years there has been debate about whether or not they are native. However it is believed that these Hibiscus plants have been present in New Zealand prior to European settlement. The maroon centered species are now critically endangered in the wild.
